Being materials for re-sculpting the face and some body treatments, the soft tissue augmentation techniques use dermal fillers within the skin, performed to strengthen, replenish or replace natural skin components and subcutaneous tissue that are lost with aging.

The use of fillers is intended to elevate the wrinkles and folds on the face, which become deeper with aging. They are also used to improve asymmetries, enhance lips, soften depressed scars, treat wrinkles around the mouth and replace volumes of the face or facial structures that decline with age.

The fillers currently used are temporary. The hyaluronic acid (HA) is widely considered one of the best and safest fillers (the gold standard). It can be used on the face and body to improve wrinkles, folds and contours. This material lasts about one year, but can be replaced according to the patient’s needs. There are various HA fillers in the market.

The application of fillers is well tolerated by most patients, being performed under topical local anesthesia or nerve block. The patient can return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure. Bruising and mild swelling may occur.

A well-performed filling procedure enhances the beauty of the face and gives a natural appearance, and may postpone the need for, or even optimize the results of plastic surgery.
