Mycoses are very common diseases caused by fungi. They are superficial or deep. Superficial mycoses are more common and can affect the skin, nails, hair and mucous membranes.

Some conditions favor the growth of fungi, such as heat, humidity, personal predisposition and immunodeficiency. Therefore, some regions of the body are more prone to the development of mycoses, such as the skin folds, especially of the genital area and feet. However, any area of the skin can be affected, such as hands, face, etc.

Generally, skin mycoses appear as round or oval lesions, with raised reddened borders and desquamation in the center, or as round and whitish spots. In the nails, they may lead to the simple detachment of the distal edge of toenails or fingernails or appear as whitish spots on the surface. When the infection reaches the nail root, treatment becomes more difficult and may even deform the affected nail. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are important.

On suspicion of mycosis, see your dermatologist.
