BOTULINUM TOXINS

Injections to smooth wrinkles and reduce sweating

In Cosmetic Dermatology, botulinum toxin is used to relax the muscles that cause aging in the face and neck, which are responsible for the so-called “expression lines” or “expression wrinkles”. This type of wrinkle is more evident in the upper half of the face, causing the so-called “crow’s feet”, forehead wrinkles that characterize “awe” or “surprise” and those located between the eyebrows (glabellar), that characterize “worry or concern”. However, this drug is also used on the lower half of the face, neck and décolleté area. By relaxing specific muscles, it can be used to improve gummy smile, the wrinkles of the neck and the décolleté area, asymmetries and facial paralysis.

A few years ago, botulinum toxin was found to be effective in the treatment of excessive sweating, also called hyperhidrosis, in various locations, such as the armpits, hands, face, trunk, etc..

The application of botulinum toxin is quick, taking only a few minutes. Delicate syringes with very fine needles are used. Anesthetic ointments can also be used to reduce any discomfort during its application. The patient can return to their normal activities immediately after the session. This treatment should only be applied by trained doctors because the cosmetic result depends largely on the technique and the doses used by the  professional.

This type of treatment can be used alone or in combination with other clinical or surgical procedures, during the same or in different treatment sessions, in order to improve or enhance results. Fillers are most often combined with botulinum toxin.

Treatment must be repeated to ensure the maintenance and progression of improvements. To maintain optimum results in aesthetic treatments of the face and neck, botulinum toxin should be applied every four to six months, which is the period estimated for the duration of the results. For the treatment of excessive sweating, injections can be repeated every six to eight months or at longer intervals.

This is considered the treatment of choice for facial expression wrinkles. The establishment and the progressive worsening of wrinkles are also effectively treated by botulinum toxins.
